National Action Plan Priority Regions

The National Action Plan is designed to improve land and water management in 21 priority regions. Government and community partnerships will be formalised through agreements defining goals and responsibilities for all parties. The Plan will fund integrated regional plans in the priority regions.

Regional plans will vary from catchment to catchment, but all will include actions to manage regional water quality, salinity and biodiversity. Actions may include:

  • protection and rehabilitation of waterways, floodplains, and wetlands;
  • engineered water quality improvements such as salt interception technologies and removal of some weirs and disused structures;
  • salinity prevention measures and drainage improvements; and
  • land use change or amalgamation of properties, where current operations are no longer viable.

The priority regions are highlighted on this map. Because the problems of salinity and water quality extend across catchment and state/territory borders, so do the boundaries of some of the priority regions. Click here to open a large image
